“Janice (CEO of Harris Hospital) also no longer dreads board of directors meetings. She says now all she has to do is summarize the presentation she received in her monthly EIP progress review meeting. Having to create no special presentations is terrific! Now she only talks to an EPRS software posted presentation that has links to Harris’s IEE value chain to describe how things are going from a high-level satellite and 30,000-foot-level perspective, along with actions that are being underway to make things better.

“Janice says that it’s great no longer to hear people creating stories when talking to a table of numbers about why this quarter’s number is up or down!  Janice says her board of directors’ meetings are now much shorter and to the point.

“Janice believes that the concepts of IEE provide additional benefits with the management challenges associated with more people working remotely from home or residing at other locations, including our board of directors. With EPRS software, up-to-date metrics and processes are readily accessible by all. Also, the software provides our organizational EIP and the status of all improvement projects. All this readily available, up-to-date information provides a framework for more productive meetings and discussions.

“Janice believes that our hospital could win the Malcolm Baldrige award with minimal effort in a first-time application.  She said that all we’d have to do is learn how it’d be best to fill out the Baldrige application forms since IEE addresses all seven Baldrige award criteria categories, which are:

  • Leadership: How upper management leads the organization and how the organization leads within the community.
  • Strategy: How the organization establishes and plans to implement strategic directions.
  • Customers: How the organization builds and maintains strong, lasting relationships with customers.
  • Measurement, analysis, and knowledge management: How the organization uses data to support key processes and manage performance.
  • Workforce: How the organization empowers and involves its workforce.
  • Operations: How the organization designs, manages, and improves critical processes.
  • Results: How the organization performs in terms of customer satisfaction, finances, human resources, supplier and partner performance, operations, governance, and social responsibility, and how the organization compares to its competitors.”

Discussion of the Book Described Concepts

As a mechanical engineer working in IBM development, Forrest Breyfogle III took a Design of Experiments (DOE) class in 1975 that changed his life.
