The Making of S4/IEE Master Black Belts and Black Belts
A brief word from Forrest Breyfogle III, CEO of Smarter Solutions, Inc.

Over the last 15 years, Smarter Solutions has had the honor of working with various companies to improve their knowledge base and strategic actions in implementing Six Sigma and Lean methodologies. From time to time, the question has been raised on what fully qualifies an individual to be deemed a Master Black Belt or Black Belt. If you’re at GE, it is one set of qualifications while if your at Dell or HP, it could be a 180 degree difference. The list goes on from various small, medium, and large-size companies alike. In assisting those companies, we have worked toward building a sustainable enterprise-level, next generation Lean Six Sigma approach in certifying Master Black Belts and Black Belts. Additionally, we’ve identified answers for increasing our clients awareness in training and hiring their very own staff of Master Black Belts and Black Belts.

If your company has ever tried to hire a Master Black Belt or even a Black Belt, one can see the playing field for which qualifies either is not in the employer's favor. With the various so called “Six Sigma and Lean providers” saturating the market with training services, it appears to be a minute task to move into the elite status of both. Most individuals applying for certification are achieving it for that very reason: certification. Why not, it only enriches the personal resume… but what about the company and customer value?

Most programs are becoming generalized and “watered-down” in the topics and time it takes to complete the certification. So when it comes down to really implementing and utilizing a majority of the toolsets, the various certifications basically certify the old methodologies of Six Sigma and Lean. This statement alone is what makes the S4/IEE certification for both Master Black and Black Belt a value-add.

We don’t certify only on the history of Six Sigma and Lean. We base certification upon the applied knowledge, not only theory, of each Master Black Belt and Black Belt on selected projects aligned to our customers’ business needs on an enterprise level and not just departmentalized. What does this mean? First, selected projects are not certified by simply taking a test. Secondly, our programs strive for both certifed Master Black Belts and Black Belts to develop a complete company value chain tied to your vision and mission, define measurable metrics, and align projects based upon the business needs.

Why hire and/or pay someone for the title when they lack the statistical and applied knowledge? It is your bottom line and organization, and we care about giving your personnel the most effective chance to improving the bottom line in growing your base of customers and cash. This is the mainstream in making of S4/IEE Master Black Belts and Black Belts.

Next month, join me as I discuss the Six Sigma implementation on an enterprise level, and the value-add to a company's existence in achieving more customers and cash. Until Next Time...

Forrest Breyfogle III
