eSmarter Blog: Boardroom
Back Scratching in the Boardroom: Issues and Resolution.
It
was reported that the average chief executive pay was 179
times the average pay for workers in 2005, which was up from
a multiple of 90 in 1994. Considering an inflation adjustment
the average total pay for the worker rose by only 8 percent
in the time period from 1995 to 2005, while for 350 largest
companies the median chief executive pay rose 150 percent
at the 350 largest companies. Considering a ratio of earnings
by employers, the top executive earnings...

Remote
Training and Coaching Lessons
Written
by Rick Haynes |
I have
always been a traditional instructor and coach. Believing
in face-to-face classroom training and 1-on-1 coaching. As
the tools and technology has moved towards the internet-based
communications, I am beginning to change my beliefs.
Smarter Solutions is evaluating a green belt course taught
100% remote. We are using on-line meeting tools to hold weekly
training sessions and I must admit it is working better than
I expected. This blog...

FMEA - A multifunctional Tool in Process Improvement
Written by Rick Haynes |
I just
reviewed a project from a student that used the FMEA (Failure
Modes and Effects Analysis) tool to complete almost all aspects
of her project. This spurred me to write on this tool, that
I consider one of the most underutilized tools taught in Lean
Six Sigma
First, what are they for? FMEA is a tool to assess and manager
risk. It began with NASA and gained most credibility in the
automotive industry. When I was working in manufacturing,
many years ago, an aerospace customer required an FMEA on
all processes used to build their products.
Generally, there are two recognized forms, the...

| Stop Wasting Improvement Resources
|
In
lean Six Sigma and lean kaizen event programs, improvement
projects are often selected from a list of potential
opportunities that were determined from a brainstorming
session. This effort might provide some initial gains
when starting a deployment; however, it typically stalls
out and the process improvement teams are laid off when
times get tough.
The
reason for this downsizing is that often process improvement
efforts are not expended in areas where the overall
enterprise benefits the most; e.g., focusing on sales
and marketing when excess production capacity is available.
This
article walks through some of the frequent short-comings
of Theory of Constraints and how it can best be applied
to the enterprise.

Are Your Business Metrics Measuring the Right Thing?
|
Business
organizations need a business management system that
has predictive scorecards, which encourage behaviors
that benefit the enterprise as a whole. Common place
red-yellow-green goal-based scorecards can lead to silo
improvement efforts that result in much firefighting.
Described
is an overall corporate performance management (CPM)
system where organizations can analyze their predictive
value-chain metrics collectively with other considerations,
such as the current business-economic environment and
the Theory of Constraints (TOC), to develop strategies.
