eSmarter Blog: Four
Fatal Flaws of Strategic Planning.
Strategic
planning needs to be part of an overall structured business
governance system that creates healthy policies and orchestrates
with business scorecards, business improvement, and control.
In a Harvard Business Review article, “Four Fatal Flaws
of Strategic Planning”, Ed Barros describes the following
mistakes that undermine well-intentioned strategy-formulation
efforts. These strategic planning mistakes are [...] Read

Three
Forces Disrupting Management.
Written
by Forrest W. Breyfogle, III
I agree
that the current management system needs reinvention. A business
system is needed that leads to the 3 Rs of the business; i.e.,
everyone doing the Right things, and doing them Right, at
the Right time. In a Wall Street Journal article, “Three
Forces Disrupting Management”, Gary Hamel makes the
following business management system statements[...]

Why
Lean or Six Sigma can fail.
Written
by Rick Haynes |
I read
an article yesterday that spoke to something that I hear from
Forrest Breyfogle all the time. The article speaks about Lean,
but it could just have easily been about a project based Six
Sigma Program. This article is one page, but it is very well
written. If you consider one of the top Lean companies in
the US, Delphi, who [...] Read

Probability Models Predict Performance? No they do not.
Written
by Rick Haynes |
I just
read an article in Quality Digest which has an insight that
I want to reinforce. The article is by Donald Wheeler, a proponent
of i-chart usage similar to the 30,000-foot-level metric concepts,
titled Probability Models don’t generate your data.
He speaks
on a small part of our IEE message, in that knowing a distribution
does not alone provide predictive results. His example deals
with data for the number of hurricanes per year since the
1800s. In this data set, when compared to a poisson distribution
it does [...]

| Monte-Carlo
Simulation: An underutilized Lean Six Sigma Tool.
|
The
stereotypical Lean Six Sigma DMAIC project has a nice
process that produces data at a rapid enough rate that
you can evaluate improvements during the project, but
what options do you have if that is not the case? Using
Monte-Carlo simulations can be a powerful way to estimate
future performance without having to actually pilot test
or prototype the improvements. Read

Control
and Grow your Enterprise: The Right Business Measurements
and Controls Benefit the Whole Company
|
The
Enterprise process DMAIC roadmap provides a 21st century
governance system that truly aligns scorecards, strategic
planning, improvement plans, and control so that the enterprise
as a whole benefits. E-DMAIC goes beyond Lean Six Sigma
and the Balanced Scorecard. This view of the way a company
functions can change from a focus on doing whatever it
takes to meet the quarterly financial goals (the Enron
approach) to improving performance at all levels so the
overall output always reflects the maximum potential for
an entire enterprise. Read
