Improved analytics and innovation = better strategy building: Integrated Enterprise Excellence (IEE) is a business system which includes the use of analytics and innovation for more effective focused strategies building, which leads to targeted improvement and design projects -benefiting the business as a whole, avoiding sub-optimization.
Often organizations build their year-to-year efforts around a strategy that was developed in an executive retreat. With this approach, functions in the organization create plans to execute these strategies, which can change from year-to-year or with leadership transitions. In addition, opinion-based strategy statements that rely solely on intuition and insight by the leadership may not lead to the best efforts throughout the organization. If strategies are set after a thorough understanding of the enterprise performance and constraints, they are more effective and driving change and improving the business as a whole. The ability to support a strategic plan with performance data improves the buy in and acceptance across the organization. In the Enterprise Define-Measure-Analyze-Improve-Control (E-DMAIC) process, strategies are formulated around use of analytics and innovation to create an enterprise improvement plan.
The above is a modified excerpt from the book-volume, Integrated Enterprise Excellence, Volume II Business Deployment: A Leaders’ Guide for Going Beyond Lean Six Sigma and the Balanced Scorecard, copyright 2008. Innovation is included as part of the analyze phase in the E-DMAIC system roadmap, as described in Chapter 12.
“… (Integrated Enterprise Excellence or IEE is) the most complete and effective operational management system available.” Keith Moe, Group Vice-President, 3M (retired). IEE provides an enhanced, unified approach to balanced scorecards, strategic planning, and business improvement.
