Question: I am considering acquiring Lean Six Sigma certification. With an MBA, would adding this to my skill set help me in obtaining better opportunities in management consultant work? Is it worth the expense, or is the competition with qualified consultant prospects saturated with the current market. Thank you.
The market is saturated with folks who have a six sigma certification stamp on their forehead; however, there are other reasons for pursuing this training as described in
“Lean Six Sigma Black Belt and Green Belt Training Objectives“
To me I believe that the tools are important, especially when applied at the business level. However, I think that much training is just with the tools and not the overall thought roadmap process of putting it all together, especially at the business level. Also, much content has been watered down by many over the years for certification, in my opinion.
Executives often are not seeing the benefits of Six Sigma and Lean Six Sigma. If they were, when times get tough they would not be laying off the Lean Six Sigma group. Why? More often than not projects are done that do not benefit the business as a whole; e.g., let’s find someone a project since they are going into training next week. What needs to be done is to take the tools to the enterprise level so that they are part of the business decision making process.
I personally think that many are just going for certification by simply passing a test that does not even require the use of a statistical program; i.e., what can I do as a minimum to get my certification stamp.
